BASFA 1939 Retro-Hugo Award Recommendations: Best Novel

As in previous years, the Bay Area Science Fiction Association held Hugo (and Campbell) Recommendation Nights in February and March and we are posting our accumulated recommendations in a series of entries here. This year we also considered the 1939 Retrospective Hugo Awards for works originally published in 1938.

A key to the initials of the people making recommendations is in basfa's community journal. This post may change if we receive additional recommendations from club members.

Anthem (Ayn Rand): DNO
Galactic Patrol (E.E. Doc Smith): BL, DC, DNO, KAS, KP, MYS
The Great Amen (Arthur J. Burks): BL
The Legion Of Time (Jack Williamson): BL, DC
The Minimum Man (Time To Be Gone) (Andre Marvell): BL
Synthetic Men of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs): DB, DC, MYS, SM, YU
Tarzan And The Forbidden City (Edgar Rice Burroughs): DB, MYS, SM
The Thought-Reading Machine (Andre Maurois (Emile Herzog)): BL, DNO
Three Thousand Years (Thomas Calvert McClary): BL

Hmm...the Loncon3 Retro Hugo page has "Anthem" by Ayn Rand listed in the Novella-eligible category, rather than Novel. The copy I read clocked in at nineteen thousand words, so it seems to be firmly in the Novella category.

(of course, it's actually "Ego" that's eligible, not the 1946 reworked version renamed "Anthem". I haven't read the 1946 version - maybe it's considerably longer and that's how the confusion has arisen?)
